I have had the privilege of utilizing all major brands of cameras and lenses, including Canon, Fuji, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, and Sony. This opportunity arose from my engagements to capture events for various companies, using equipment provided by event management firms.
The brands I personally own are primarily Canon and Nikon. I have sold all my micro four-thirds equipment to streamline my collection with Canon. While I have always been passionate about the gear aspect of photography, my current focus is more on photoshoots rather than acquiring new equipment. The Canon RF cameras and lenses perform exceptionally well, and I find it unnecessary to upgrade the hardware as frequently as I once did.
If I were to begin anew, I would opt for full-frame cameras, likely starting with the Canon R mount, or alternatively the Nikon Z mount. Canon offers a comprehensive lineup of RF lenses suitable for practical photographers, and their catalog continues to expand. The 14-35mm, 24-70mm, and 100-500mm lenses, which I own, are exemplary. The RF 70-200mm (both f/2.8 and f/4), 50mm f/1.2, and 85mm f/1.2 lenses, although not personally owned, I have had the opportunity to use and found them to be exceptional. My collection also includes the budget-friendly RF 35mm, 50mm, and 85mm lenses. When traveling overseas, my bag invariably contains the R6, 14-35mm, 50mm, 100-500mm, 1.4X TC, and a flash. This combination allows me to capture a wide range of photographic scenarios encountered during my travels. You might wonder why I carry the 50mm f/1.8—it is due to its compactness and lightweight nature. Ideally, I would prefer the 85mm if it were as compact. However, the 50mm versus 85mm debate is a prevalent topic in the photography community. For me, the 50mm lens wins due to its portability and satisfactory performance. In summary, the Canon RF system is highly efficient and reliable. Additionally, Canon’s EF-RF adapter provides support for EF lenses. I have transitioned from EF lenses to RF lenses.
The rationale is that, in the full-frame segment, the lens lineup is mature and meets the needs of both practical and professional photographers.
In the APS-C segment, when I prefer to travel light, I carry the Canon R7 along with the RF-S 10-18mm, RF 50mm f/1.8, and RF 100-500mm lenses. The budget ultra wide angle lens is impressively sharp even when used wide open, producing beautiful images.
For those with budget constraints, both Canon and Nikon offer excellent options in both APS-C and full-frame segments. I personally own the Nikon ZFc with the 16-50mm, 28-400mm, Laowa Z 10mm F4, and Viltrox 50mm 1.7 lenses. This entire kit is incredibly lightweight and compact. For a superzoom, the 28-400mm lens delivers stunning images. It is compact, lightweight, and most importantly, produces great images. I’ll admit, one of the reasons I chose the ZFc was its retro film camera look. This led me to research extensively, and I discovered a variety of excellent lens options in the Nikon Z series at various price points.
